Flow Assurance Intro

Flow Assurance is the engineering and science of predicting and managing production behavior of hydrocarbon as it moves from a reservoir to market through the changing environment of the production system. The term was coined by Petrobras in the early 1990s in Portuguese as Garantia do Escoamento (pt::Garantia do Escoamento), meaning literally “Guarantee of Flow”, or Flow Assurance.

In the recent year, the flow assurance becomes a vogue subject and with the popularity has come a broadening to include a multiplicity of other issues which can effect the extraction of oil and gas. The flow assurances involves effectively handling many solid deposits, such as gas hydrates, asphaltene, wax, scale, and naphthenates. These solid deposits can interact with each other and can cause catastrophic blockage formation in pipelines and result in flow assurance failure. This is particularly happen in the case of offshore sector, where the low temperatures, remote locations and often the great water depths of subsea environment conspire to exacerbate problems.

Crude/Condensate Assay

A crude oil assay is essentially the chemical evaluation of crude oil feedstock by petroleum testing laboratories. Each crude oil type has unique molecular, chemical characteristics. No crude oil type is identical and there are crucial differences in crude oil quality. The results of crude oil assay testing provide extensive detailed hydrocarbon analysis data for refiners, oil traders and producers. Assay data help refineries determine if a crude oil feedstock is compatible for a particular petroleum refinery or if the crude oil could cause yield, quality, production, environmental and other problems.

The assay can be an inspection assay or comprehensive assay. Testing can include crude oil characterization of whole crude oils and the various boiling range fractions produced from physical or simulated distillation by various procedures. Information obtained from the petroleum assay is used for detailed refinery engineering and client marketing purposes. Feedstock assay data are an important tool in the refining process. Without crude/ condensate evaluations. There is potential for loss in crude investment and/or disruptions in the refining process leading to revenue and production loss affecting the customer’s business.
